Localization of the abnormality
The detected breast lesion can be located using the following features:
- laterality;
- quadrant of the breast;
- depth of the lesion in the breast (premammary zone 1, mammary zone 2, or retromammary zone 3); and
- distance from the nipple, which is the standard reference point in the breast.
Characterization of the abnormality
Abnormalities detected on breast ultrasound are characterized using descriptors stated in the ultrasound BI-RADS lexicon.
