Breast pathology – Histopathology of the breast – Description and significance of the components of the report – Margins

  

  • A margin is considered positive only if the ink that was applied to the margin at the time of gross examination transects tumour cells.
  • Close margin: The tumour reaches close to but does not transect ink.
  • The presence of muscle tissue in the deep or posterior margin indicates that the excision has extended to the deep fascia and the finding of muscle involvement by the tumour should be documented.
