Atlas of breast cancer early detection

Breast imaging – Mammography technique – Mammography procedure – Additional mammographic views – Exaggerated CC view

An exaggerated CC (XCC) view can be taken for a suspected lesion in the lateral or medial breast tissues detected on standard CC view. It can be taken laterally (XCCL) or medially (XCCM). The XCCL view is a lateral extension of the CC projection. It shows lesions in the lateral half of the breast tissue, which is projected more completely onto the detector.

Steps to obtain the XCCL view
  1. Proceed to XCCL view after the CC projection of a breast has been obtained.
  2. Rotate the patient more medially so that the lateral half of the breast tissue is projected more completely onto the detector, and lower the compression paddle.
  3. When adequate compression has been achieved, step behind the protective lead shield and take the X-ray.

XCCM is a medial extension of the CC projection. It is obtained for a patient with clinical suspicion of a lesion in the medial half of the breast.
The medial breast tissue is almost always completely included in the CC view.
However, sometimes XCCM is taken for the medial half of the breast. The medial portion of the breast is more completely included onto the detector for a far medial lesion.

Steps to obtain the XCCM view
  1. Proceed to XCCM view after the CC view of a breast has been obtained.
  2. Rotate the patient more laterally so that the medial half of the breast tissue is projected more completely onto the detector.
  3. Apply gentle compression and obtain exposure.
