Breast pathology – Cytopathology of the breast – Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) procedure – Equipment

  

The equipment needed for FNAC is as follows:
  • 23G or 24G needle (this is finer than the needle used for phlebotomy, which is 21G);
  • 10 mL syringe;
  • Coplin jar or any wide-mouthed, screw-capped bottle containing 95% ethanol or 100% methanol;
  • glass slides preferably with frosted ends;
  • syringe holder;
  • cotton swabs;
  • alcohol or povidone–iodine solution;
  • sterile gauze for haemostasis;
  • adhesive tape;
  • disposable gloves;
  • a pencil for marking the slides;
  • paperclips for keeping the slides separated when placed in the jar with fixative; and
  • toluidine blue stain and a box of cover glasses if rapid on-site smear evaluation (ROSE) for adequacy is to be done at the bedside.
