Breast imaging – Mammography technique – Pitfalls in techniques of mammography – Overstretched RCC and RMLO views

If the serratus anterior appears to be a suspicious area of architectural distortion it may be that the views have been overstretched.

Probable cause – overstretched RCC and RMLO views
  • Overambitious attempts to include as much of the breast tissue as possible onto the breast paddle. In an overstretched RMLO view, the serratus anterior appears as a suspicious architectural distortion.

Rectification
  • Do not overstretch the breast tissue onto the mammographic field.
  • Targeted breast ultrasound in the region of concern will rule out the presence of a mass.
