Breast pathology – Histopathology of the breast – Specimen transport

All specimens for histopathology other than tissues for frozen section should be transported in 10% neutral-buffered formalin.
This is important to ensure preservation of tissue morphology, especially mitotic figures, and all the antigens and biomarkers in tumour tissue.
The container used to transport should be of a size suitable for the size of the specimen.
The volume of formalin in the container should be enough to submerge the entire specimen in formalin.
