Breast pathology – Cytopathology of the breast – Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) procedure – Additional points to remember in breast FNAC procedure

  • If the breast mass is only palpable when the patient is sitting in an upright position, fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is done in this position. Provide support to the shoulder to prevent the patient from moving backwards during the procedure.
  • Because the nipple and areola are most sensitive to pain from a needle-stick, masses in these areas are pushed away from the nipple, immobilized, and aspirated through the adjacent skin.
