Breast pathology – Cytopathology of the breast – Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) procedure – Equipment | |
The equipment needed for FNAC is as follows:
- 23G or 24G needle (this is finer than the needle used for phlebotomy, which is 21G);
- 10 mL syringe;
- Coplin jar or any wide-mouthed, screw-capped bottle containing 95% ethanol or 100% methanol;
- glass slides preferably with frosted ends;
- syringe holder;
- cotton swabs;
- alcohol or povidone–iodine solution;
- sterile gauze for haemostasis;
- adhesive tape;
- disposable gloves;
- a pencil for marking the slides;
- paperclips for keeping the slides separated when placed in the jar with fixative; and
- toluidine blue stain and a box of cover glasses if rapid on-site smear evaluation (ROSE) for adequacy is to be done at the bedside.
