Breast imaging – Mammography technique – Pitfalls in techniques of mammography – Inadequate breast compression

If the breast is not compressed enough (less than 7 kg), there will be insufficient reduction in tissue thickness to provide diagnostically acceptable image contrast.

Probable cause – inadequate breast compression
Inadequate breast compression may occur if the breast slips out of the compression paddle. A retroareolar lesion may not be well delineated.

Rectification

Ensure adequate breast compression on CC view to delineate isodense opacity in the retroareolar region.
Ensure that the breast does not slip out.
