Before application of acetic acid: The central red area is covered by columnar epithelium (ectropion). A small mucous polyp is seen protruding through the external os.

Cervix before application of acetic acid:

After application of acetic acid: The SCJ is more obvious. Diffuse thin acetowhite areas are present on the columnar epithelium as well as on the squamous epithelium.

Remarks: Diffuse acetowhite areas indicate squamous metaplasia. White patches seen on the columnar epithelium indicate very early metaplastic changes.
