Before application of acetic acid: The ectocervix is covered by pink squamous epithelium. Red columnar epithelium is seen around the external os.

Cervix before application of acetic acid:

After application of acetic acid: Thin acetowhite areas with irregular margins are visible at the 12 o’clock position, abutting the SCJ and within the TZ.

Histopathology: Normal

Remarks: Thin acetowhite areas with irregular margins are usually due to metaplasia or CIN1. If the margin is well defined, it is prudent to categorize the lesion as VIA-positive.
