VIA procedure – Examination after application of 5% acetic acid – Abnormal features – Rapidity of onset of acetowhitening

In metaplasia, inflammation, or low-grade precancer, the acetowhite area appears slowly over 20–30 seconds and fades away quickly. While applying acetic acid to the cervix, VIA providers should look for the real-time changes on the transformation zone.

In contrast, in high-grade precancer or cancer, the acetowhite changes take place very rapidly and persist for a longer period of time.

Invasive cervical cancers turn acetowhite almost immediately.
