VIA procedure – Examination after application of 5% acetic acid – Normal features – Squamous epithelium

After application of acetic acid, the colour of normal squamous epithelium does not change. In women of reproductive age, it is visible as pink smooth epithelium covering the ectocervix.

In postmenopausal women, the normal squamous epithelium lacks lustre and appears pale pink or pinkish white after application of acetic acid. The interpretation of acetowhite changes on the atrophic pale epithelium can be difficult because of the lack of contrast. The thin atrophic epithelium is easily prone to trauma, resulting in haemorrhagic spots on the ectocervix (petechial haemorrhagic spots).
