Cervicovaginal inflammation |
The common infective agents of the cervix and vagina are Candida albicans (fungus), Trichomonas vaginalis (protozoa), Chlamydia trachomatis (bacteria), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (bacteria), Gardnerella vaginalis (bacteria), Escherichia coli (bacteria), and streptococci (bacteria).
The colposcopist can provisionally diagnose the common lower genital tract infections by identifying certain characteristics. Depending on the facilities available, confirmatory tests may be advised or syndrome-based management can be given to the patient. For syndrome-based management of vaginal discharge, please consult WHO Guidelines for the management of sexually transmitted infections. |
