Bethesda American city, near Washington DC, where workshops with experts were held, sponsored by NCI, the aim of them was to revise the existing cervical cytologic terminology. The first recommendations were defined in 1988 and named The Bethesda System or TBS. In 1991 some changes were made and more recently in 2001 with an Internet forum in the latter.
