Transitional metaplasia Transitional cell metaplasia may affect the cervical mucosa more frequently in menopausal women and may be associated with an epithelial atrophy. Histologically, it appears like a hyperplastic urothelium with underlying layers made of basal and parabasal cells resembling transitional epithelial cells. Their vertical and oval-shaped nuclei show longitudinal grooves. Superficial cell layers are more horizontal but never adopt a typical morphology of umbrella cells. Cytologically, these cells form clusters. This lesion may be confused with a CIN 3. Histopathology atlas Cytopathology atlas |
