Squamous atypia These changes are often mistaken in histologic sections with CIN and may be associated with inflammation and regeneration or repair. In squamous atypia cytoplasmic membranes are well defined. The nuclei are enlarged but uniform in shape and size. The chromatin is aggregated. The epithelium is often infiltrated with migrating inflammatory cells, mitotic figures are normal and localized in basal and parabasal layers. The cells of the upper half of the epithelium are not abnormal and maturation occurs in a normal fashion. The epithelium may be atrophic. Histopathology atlas |
