Video: HPV vaccines and fighting cervical cancer in India

The Screening Group is conducting research to better understand the causes of cancer and to evaluate the most appropriate prevention strategies, diagnostic tools, and treatments to control the disease. In Pune district in Maharashtra, IARC is working closely with national institutions to evaluate the efficacy of fewer than three doses of HPV vaccine in protecting women against cervical cancer. IARC marked the International Day of Rural Women with a short video showcasing one of these research projects under way in rural India. Watch video.

Conference: XXII FIGO World Congress of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

On behalf of the Screening Group, Dr Basu conducted the IARC session on cancer screening in LMICs at the XXII FIGO World Congress of Gynaecology and Obstetrics and participated in a training workshop. Following topics were covered: Cancer screening in the populations with hight HIV prevalence, optimizing treatment of cervical premalignant lesiosn in the LMICs, a pragmatice approach to tackle the growing burden of breast cancer in the LMICs and cervical cancer screening in post-HPV vaccine era in the LMICs.

Dr Sauvaget and Dr Muwonge attended the conference to present the progress of the randomized controlled trial (RCT) of the Liger Thermal Coagulator versus cryocautery and versus large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ) to prevent cervical neoplasia in VIA-positive women in LMICs in Zambia, and an updated meta-analysis to address the feasibility, acceptability, safety, and efficacy of thermal ablation in the treatment of cervical cancer precursor lesions.

Visit of Dr Muna Abusanuga, National Center for Disease Control, Tripoli, Libya

Dr Abusanuga was awarded the IARC-UICC fellowship and spent 2 weeks in the Screening Group. The purpose of her work is “Situational analysis of the cancer primary prevention efforts: Hepatitis B and HPV vaccination programme in Libya in the last five years”.

Mr Eric Lucas visited the BARC institute to work on the development of a new atlas on mammography and early detection of breast cancer.

Field visits in India for the HPV vaccination study to evaluate the effectiveness of one, two, and three doses of quadrivalent HPV vaccine in preventing cervical neoplasia

Mr Eric Lucas conducted field visits to study sites in Ambilikai, Hyderabad, Barshi, Pune, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai to discuss the project’s implementation, progress, and challenges.

Drs Chaturvedi and Cheung visited the Screening Group to work on the project of the evaluation of the variability in the efficacy of oral cancer screening according to risk of oral cancer.

Visit of Dr K. Ramadas, Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum, India

Dr Ramadas visited the Screening Group to discuss the progress of work on the project “Follow-up evaluation of clinical breast examination screening in a community-based cluster randomized controlled trial in Trivandrum District, India”.
