New publication: Evaluation of the national cervical cancer screening program in Morocco: achievements and challenges

IARC/WHO EURO Workshop on Implementation of Screening Programmes

The Screening Group team participated as faculty members for this interactive workshop, organized by the Section of Early Detection and Prevention, on implementation of cancer screening programmes, with representatives from Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Montenegro, the Republic of Moldova, Romania, the Russian Federation, Serbia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. Training course on the role of colposcopy in the early detection and prevention of cervical cancer, Dakar, Senegal

Dr Partha Basu conducted a colposcopy training course in Dakar, Senegal, to train gynaecologists from Benin and Senegal, in the framework of the Care4Afrique project.

Video: Developing a model for cancer screening in Udaipur, India

As part of the model under trial, which being piloted in the Gogunda rural block of Rajasthan, trained community health workers visit people in their homes to screen them for common diseases and educate them about NCDs including diabetes, hypertension, breast cancer, oral cancers, and cervical cancer. The project supports Indian government policy, which seeks to screen both men and women between the ages of 30 and 60 for common NCDs. Watch video.

New publication: “A pilot study to evaluate home-based screening for the common non-communicable diseases by a dedicated cadre of community health workers in a rural setting in India”

A study initiated in 2017 by the Screening Group evaluates the home-based screening for the common non-communicable diseases delivered by community health workers in a rural setting in Udaipur, India. The study published in the journal BMC Public Health reports that delivery of NCD screening services at home by trained health workers is feasible and well-accepted by the study population.

Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) meeting for the HPV vaccination study to evaluate the effectiveness of one, two, and three doses of quadrivalent HPV vaccine in preventing cervical neoplasia

The DSMB meeting was held in Ahmedabad, India and was jointly organized with the local principal investigators from the Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute (GCRI).

New publication: “Performance of colorectal cancer screening in the European Union Member States: data from the second European screening report”

Dr Basu and colleagues presented comparative data about the performance of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening programmes in the European Union Member States. This is the first report presenting comparative data about performance of ongoing CRC organised screening programmes, using quality indicators recommended by international guidelines. This analysis documented a large variability, which might result in potential variations in the future balance of benefits and harms of the programmes.View the publication.
