Assessment visit to Saudi Arabia

Dr Partha Basu visited Saudi Arabia to evaluate the new cancer screening model included in the basic benefits package at primary health centre level implemented by the ministry of health.

IARC Science Café: Introduction to REDCap a web-based research data collection system

Mr Eric Lucas, Ms Sylvaine Barbier in collaboration with the IARC IT group presented an IARC Science Café to introduce the REDCap platform to IARC staff. REDCap is a powerful web-based research data collection system that the Screening Group piloted and started to use to manage data from clinical field projects within the Section of Early Detection and Prevention. The objective of this presentation was to promote this new tool within the Agency.

Dr Parham is a professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA, and the University of Zambia. With his team, Dr Parham was among the first to provide cervical cancer screening and treatment services on a broad scale to HIV-positive women in sub-Saharan Africa. Watch Video.

Visit of Dr Groesbeck Parham, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA

Dr Groesbeck Parham visited the Screening Group to discuss the ongoing United States National Cancer Institute-funded project “Randomized controlled trial of the Liger Thermal Coagulator versus cryosurgery and versus large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ) to prevent cervical neoplasia in VIA-positive women in low- and middle-income countries”.

WCD2019 in IARC: 6th IARC Cancer and Society Lecture will be presented by Groesbeck Parham.

Dr Groesbeck Parham from the Centre for Infectious Disease Research, University of Zambia, Lusaka, principal investigator of the United States National Cancer Institute project in Zambia, presented on the occasion of World Cancer Day 2019 a lecture about the progress achieved in cervical cancer screening in Zambia. IARC Press Release: “HPV vaccination is safe, effective, and critical for eliminating cervical cancer”

On World Cancer Day 2019, Dr Elisabete Weiderpass, Director of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), reiterated IARC’s commitment to fighting cervical cancer and fully endorsed the position of the World Health Organization (WHO) on human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, confirming that HPV vaccination is safe, efficacious, and critical in the fight against cervical cancer.
