Squames Squames are superficial keratinized squamous cells, generally anucleated. The cytoplasm is yellow and the place of the nucleus may remain visible. A great number of anucleated squames may indicate the presence of abnormal keratinization or leukoplakia. The presence of squames may be explained by contamination (vulvar). In squamous cell carcinomas some keratinized cells may resemble squames.
