New publication: The IARC Perspective on Cervical Cancer Screening

A Working Group of international experts was convened by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) to review and assess all available studies of current methods for cervical cancer screening in terms of their effect on cervical cancer incidence and mortality. A Special Report published today in The New England Journal of Medicine summarizes the studies reviewed and presents the conclusions of the Working Group. The detailed assessments will be published as Volume 18 of the IARC Handbooks of Cancer Prevention.

Third live session of CanScreen5 Train the Trainers learning programme for Latin American countries

The CanScreen5 Train the Trainers learning programme for Latin American countries has held its third live session. This session included a keynote lecture from Dr Raúl Murillo, from the Centro Javeriano de Oncología in Colombia, on a consensus on indicators for cervical cancer screening in Latin America. The eighteen participants from Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala and Uruguay also discussed the cancer control measures in place in their countries. Additionally, the CanScreen5 data collection forms were presented and will be discussed in the next live session in two weeks' time.

New publication: Integrative oncology: Addressing the global challenges of cancer prevention and treatment

Authors of this article published in CA journal, discussed the challenges to implement Integrative oncology in LMICs, which provides a framework to research and integrate safe, effective TCIM alongside conventional cancer treatment and can help bridge health care gaps in delivering evidence-informed, patient-centered care.

Postdoctoral Fellowships: Keitly Mensah

Dr Keitly Mensah is a public health medical doctor and holds a PhD in Health Services Research. Her postdoctoral research will focus on evaluating and improving the implementation of cervical screening among vulnerable women in Europe (CBIG-SCREEN project). She will also be involved in research addressing inequalities to cancer screening access and cancer screening programmes improvement worldwide.

Internal Seminar: CanScreen5

Dr Li Zhang, post doctoral fellow in the Cancer Early Detection and Prevention Branch, introduced the CanScreen5 project during an internal seminar. CanScreen5 is the new global initiative by IARC, which aims to encourage and support counrtries to collect and use cancer screening data for evaluation and improvement. During this presentation, she summarized the workflow and the current status of the project.

New publication: FIGO Cancer Report 2021

Dr R. Sankararanarayanan, Senior Visiting Scientist, participated in the preparation of the FIGO Cancer Report 2021 published in the International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics. The FIGO Cancer Report 2021 contains 11 chapters which focus on the diagnosis, surgical, and non-surgical management of the main gynecological cancers, as well as international efforts to eradicate certain gynecological cancers and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on gynecological cancer care.

New publication: National cancer control plans across the Eastern Mediterranean region: challenges and opportunities to scale-up

In this Policy Review article published in the Lancet Oncology, authors used the WHO regional framework for action on cancer to systematically analyse the status of cancer control planning and implementation across the six domains of cancer control, from prevention to palliation. Authors highlight the gaps, and the opportunities for bridging these gaps, to achieve scale-up on implementation of cancer control programmes in the Eastern Mediterranean region. View the article.

New publication: Cervical cancer burden, status of implementation and challenges of cervical cancer screening in Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries

This new article, published in Cancer Letters, reviews the cervical cancer burden and the status of implementation of cervical cancer screening in the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries. This review is the first of its kind to show the disease burden of cervical cancer, progress till date to implement screening and corresponding challenges, and propose tailored solutions to promote cervical cancer prevention and help ASEAN countries remain aligned to cervical cancer elimination strategies. New release (October) of the CanScreen5 platform with new country data

The CanScreen5 IARC Secretariat, following support of country collaborators and validation by our scientific committee, is happy to announce the availability on the CanScreen5 platform of the following country factsheets: Canada (Yukon province data), Saint Lucia, and Suriname.
Visit the CanScreen5 website to explore characteristics and performance of cancer screening programmes across the globe in more than 62 countries.
